Famous for luxury resorts built over coral-filled shallows that surround its many remote islands, the Maldives recently gained two new castaway candidates. Beach-ringed Kandolhu Island in the North Ari Atoll, about 43 miles southwest of the capital of Malé, hosts the new Kandolhu, a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Its 30 units range from beachfront cottages to over-water villas with private pools. Guests can snorkel or paddleboard from the beach, sign up for one of three diving trips offered daily or indulge in a seaweed-body-buffing treatment in the full-service spa. Among several dining options, management will prepare a private table on the beach for special occasions. Rooms from $568, including breakfast. Club Med just expanded its operations in the island nation with Club Med Finolhu Villas, featuring 30 over-water bungalows and 22 beach cottages, each with a plunge pool, on the island of Gasfinolhu. The secluded adults-only resort includes its own restaurant, spa, bar, fitness center and pool, though guests also have access to the nearby Club Med Kani. Five minutes away by boat, the more social sibling offers kayaking, fishing and speedboat charters. Rooms from $627 a person, double occupancy, all-inclusive.
